Designing Out Risk: Why a Safety in Design Register Belongs on Every Project
Safety in design is the principle that the safest time to remove a hazard is before it is ever built, not after a worker is standing in front of it. A safety in design register is the tool that makes this principle practical: it lists the hazards identified at each stage of design, from how a facade will be maintained to how a roof will be accessed, and records the specific design response taken to eliminate or reduce each risk.
In many jurisdictions this is not optional. Duty holders, including designers, are legally required to consider how their decisions affect the health and safety of the people who will build, maintain and eventually demolish the structure. A register turns that legal duty into an auditable record, showing a regulator or a client exactly when a hazard was identified and what was done about it, rather than leaving safety as an assumption that nobody can point back to.
The real benefit, though, shows up on site. A parapet designed at the wrong height, a plant room with no safe access, or a glazing system that cannot be replaced without a crane are the kinds of problems that are cheap to fix on paper and expensive, sometimes dangerous, to fix once construction is underway. Reviewing the register at each design stage forces the team to ask how the building will actually be built and maintained, not just how it will look, which is precisely the conversation that prevents these issues from reaching site.
A safety in design register works best when it is a shared document rather than one person’s checklist. Architects, engineers and the builder should all be able to add hazards as they identify them, and the register should travel with the project from concept design through to handover, so that whoever maintains the building later inherits a clear account of the risks that were considered and how they were addressed.
